The Kamakhya Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the mother goddess Kamakhya, one of the oldest Shakti Peeths. It is one the most popular temples in India. The Kamakhya Devi Temple is one of the most ancient temples in the state Assam. It is dedicated to mother goddess Sati an embodiment of goddess Durga and the consort of Lord Shiva. One of the best known temple of Guwahati is Kamakhya, situated on Nilachal Hill, eight km west of the city.

The current structure is about 500 years old. This temple is dedicated to Mata Kamakhya Devi (also known as Shakti). It is also a major pilgrimage center for Tantric Worshippers in India. The temple was built in first millennium during the time of Kamarupa. Allahabad rock inscriptions of Samudragupta mentioned about it. This temple was destroyed in the early 16th century and then rebuilt in the 17th century by king Nara Narayana of Cooch Behar. The vertex of the temple is oval shaped like beehive-having 7 spires, 3 golden pitchers on blossoming lotus, upon that a golden trident. On the other hand, the temple's structure was said to be erected by King Chilarai, a descendant of the Koch family, in 1565. The major attraction of the Kamakhya temple is the method of worship which is peculiar compared to other shrines in India. This holy place is a synthesis of both Aryan and non-Aryan practices adopted by the temple. This temple honour the Mother Goddess Kamakhya, the essence of female energy.
