The great mosque Jama Masjid of Old Delhi is the final architectural of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan with a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 devotees. Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India. The Jama or Jami Masjid was constructed between 1644 and 1658 during the rule of Shah Jahan. Constructed by 5000 workers in six years this mosque is a major attraction of Indian capital Delhi. Jama Masjid is built with sandstone and white marble. There are 3 gateways, two 40m high minarets and 4 towers in Jama Masjid Delhi. The tower of the Jama Masjid is made up of five distinctive storeys. Built between 1644 and 1658 It was known as central mosque of the old delhi in the time of shah jahan. The architecture of another mosque built by the son of Shah Jahan in Lahore is similar to Jama Masjid.

After the Revolt of 1857, the British confiscated the mosque and had soldiered stationed here. One of the largest mosques in Asia, the Jama Masjid offers an excellent view of the entire old city. The main eastern entrance, probably used by the emperors, remains closed on most days of the week.
