Located near Sagara, Shimoga District of Karnataka state Jog Falls is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India.Jog falls also known by the nickname Gerusoppe falls and Jogada Gundi are counted amongst the highest water falls in India, with a height of 253 meters, created by the Sharavathi River.

Sharavati, a river which rises at Ambutirtha, near Nonabar, in the Thirthahalli taluka and takes the north-westerly course by Fatte petta, receives the Haridravati on the right below Pattaguppe and the Yenne Hole on the left above Barangi. On arriving at the frontier it bends to the west, and precipitating itself down the Falls of Gersoppa and passing that village which is really some 29 kilometres distant, discharges into the sea at Honnavar in North Kanara.The water from Sharavathi River pours down in four segments, namely Raja, Rover, Rocket and Rani Falls.The falls are in four distinct cascades called as, Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket. There is an hydro electric power generating station name after Mahatma Gandhi.The name was later changed to Mahatma Gandhi hydro-electric Project. It was served by Hirebhaskara dam until 1960. After 1960, due to the ideas of Sir M. Visvesvarayya, Linganmakki Dam is being used for power generation.The power station was previously named Krishna Rajendra hydro-electric project, after the King of Mysore at that time. The name was later changed to Mahatma Gandhi hydro-electric Project. During Monsoons the Jog falls voluminous creating a spectacular sight with rainbows every now and then. One can take a adventurous walk at the bottom of the gorge when the sluice gates of the Linganmakki dam are closed.Backwater of this river Sharavathi forms so many small islands. There is no way to reach these islands.
Best time to visit Jog Falls
The best time to visit Jog Falls is during the monsoon. Other places to visit near the falls are Dabbe falls, Linganamakki Dam, Tunga Anicut Dam, Thyvare Koppa Lion and Tiger reserve and Sharavati River.This place is almost resides in the border of Western ghats of mountain ranges. Afternoon is the best time to watch the fall as sunlight will directly fall on the water fall.There are viewing points to see and enjoy the water fall.The walk to the bottom of the falls is highly recommended only for the fit, and it takes around 30 minutes to reach the bottom but it may take about an hour or more to climb back depending on one's fitness level. It is better to take some refreshments along.Though during the monsoon season, there is plenty of water, the falls are often shrouded in fog and so it is best to visit these falls just after the monsoon.

How to Reach Jog Falls
Jog falls is easily accessible and is well connected by road and train. The nearest town Sagar is around 30kms from the fall. Jog fall located on National Highway number 206 connecting Honovar to Tumkur and is well connected by road. Jog fall is 372 KM from Bangalore the capital of Karnataka State. One has to take a deviation of about 2kms, from the national highway to reach the falls.
By Air :
The nearest International airport is Bangalore airport 378 kms away. Also a domestic airport Mangalore is 180km,Hubli Airport 130 km from the falls.
By Rail :
The nearest railway station is Shimoga (104 kms from Jog).You can reach Jog Falls by train through Shimoga railway station, which is connected by train with Bangalore.You can reach Jog Falls by train through Shimoga railway station, which is connected by train with Bangalore. From Shimoga one can go to Taluguppa in a train meter gauge or in a bus. From Taluguppa it is 16kms to Jog by road. There are around 4 trains daily to Shimoga from Bangalore.

The best approach from Bangalore is via Tumkur road, NH 4 and then turn left at Tumkur, along the NH 206 to Shimoga and Sagara towns which have several buses to the falls each day.It is quite comfortable to reach Jog Falls by road as the place is well connected by the good networked roads. Jog falls is at a distance of 372 kilometers from Bangalore. Now there are direct KSRTC buses including luxury coaches from Bangalore to Jog Falls. One can also take a direct bus from Bangalore to Shimoga or Sagara and then take local bus from Sagara to Jog falls.
