The Nanda Devi National Park is situated in the higher ranges of Himalaya in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand in North India is Situated at the base of Nanda Devi peak also India’s second highest peak.Though the park was notified only in 1982, it has a long history. W.W. Garden was the first person to reach this region in 1883, but his expedition to the Nanda Devi Peak failed to create any impact. In 1936, Tilman and N.E. Odell scaled the Nanda Devi and opened its vista for others to follow. The Nanda Devi National Park is located in the upper Himalayan ranges of the Chamoli district in the Garhwal division in the state of Uttaranchal. The park extends from the latitude 30°24' in the North to the longitude 79°53' in the East.The park is divided into two parts — Inner and Outer. The Upper Rishi Valley, often referred to as the Inner Sanctuary is fed by Changbang, North Rishi and North Nanda Devi glaciers. The Trisuli and Ramani glaciers are features of the Outer Sanctuary. Nanda Devi National Park was established in the year 1980 to protect the high attitude Himalayan flora & fauna.The history of this sanctuary says that the British Mountaineers,Mr. Eric Shipton and Mr.Bill Tilman were the first men to reach this sanctuary.
Flora at Nanda Devi National Park
The reserve supports a large number of crops, fruit trees and vegetables. The forest cover in this park is mainly restricted to the Rishi Gorge and the main vegetation is of fir, birch, rhododendron, and juniper. The Flora of the Nanda Devi National Park is supposed to be one of the richest preserves of the world with atleast 312 floral species of which atleast 17 are very rare one. In the inner sanctuary, conditions are drier and near the Nanda Devi Glacier, there is almost no vegetation. From Ramani, the vegetation changes to alpine and only juniper scrubs are the dominating vegetation. The Juniper scrubs gradually give way to grasses, prone mosses, and lichens. Vegetation changes from alpine to junipers scrubs that dominate the vegetal growth of inner circle. Apart from juniper vegetation, grasses, prone mosses and lichens are also give way to other type of vegetation.

Animal population of species like bharal, Himalayan tahr, serow, goral, snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, brown bear, leopard, common langur, Himalayan musk deer, and brown beer dominate the park area. The fauna of Nanda Devi National Park is rich in some of the Himalayan species like serow, snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, Himalayan black bear, Himalayan musk deer, bharal, goral, brown bear, leopard, common langur. Warblers, gresbreaks, rose finches, and ruby throat represent avifauna here. Approximately 80 species have been spotted in this park. According to the latest stastics report there are atleast some 114 species of birds in Nanda Devi National Park. The main attraction in bird watching is warblers, gresbreaks, rose finches, ruby throat and other birds which are easily seen here.

Nanda Devi National Park has a distinct climate is six months of the year, the region remains under a snow. For the rest of the year, the region has a dry climate with heavy rainfall from June to August. The visitors will move in groups. Each group will consist of maximum of five visitors. Not more than two groups are permitted in one day and not more than four groups will be permitted in one week. The ideal time to visit the Nanda Devi National Park is from April to October. In the months of June to August there is heavy rainfall in Nanda Devi National Park area.
