It is some 200 miles east of Mumbai (Bombay) and 130 miles north of Pune. Sai Baba Temple is a holy shrine that is attracting millions of devotees from many years. Sai Baba was born in 1838 and died in 1918. His real name, birthplace and date of birth are not known. Revered equally by both Hindus and Muslims, Sai Baba lived in a mosque and after he died was cremated in a temple. Saibaba is believed to have arrived at the village of Shirdi when he was about sixteen years old. He took up residence in a Khandoba temple, where a villager (Mahalsapathi) at worship first called him Sai ("saint"). Bearing an extremely simple and ascetic life, Sai Baba lived in the village as a mendicant monk. Both Hindus and Muslims believe in Saibaba and visit the Saibaba Temple at least once in a week, preferably on Thursday. On every Thursday, a special Aarti (prayer) is performed in the temple. Other places of tourist interest are the Gurusthan, the Khandoba Temple, the Shani Mandir, the Narsimha Mandir, the Changdev Maharaj Samadhi and the Sakori Ashram. Spread in an area of 200 sq. Km, the shrine was made over the Samadhi of Sai Baba. Each day around 25,000 devotees come for Baba’s darshan and on festivals the figure comes into lakhs. Ramnavmi, Guru Purnima and Vijayadashami are the major festivals that are celebrated with great enthusiasm and passion.

Shirdi is most famous for the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple which has been constructed on the Samadhi of Shri Sai Baba. In 1954, the temple got the idol of Sai Baba and the image is visible from the main entrance of the hall. In order to get the close glimpse of Sai Baba, one has to cross the hall, where pictures and photos of Sai and his devotees are installed. Sai Baba never discriminated between the rich and the poor. He was equally indifferent to honour or dishonour shown to him by the people. He used to utter the name of 'Allah' frequently. Sai Baba raised a flower garden in the village and used to water the plants every day. He spent a lot of his later years in that garden. Sai Baba went through his divine mission by providing the needy with his love, compassion; purity and spiritual knowledge that helped them live a happy and dignified life. Sai Baba left his physical body and went into Samadhi in 1918. Shirdi is most popular for the world-famous Samadhi Mandir, home of the spiritual Sai Baba's interred remains. It is at this hallowed site that hundreds of thousands of devotees, worshippers, and tourists from all across India and the world come to pay homage to Sai Baba.
