Manas National Park Also Known As Manas Wildlife Sanctuary- Assam - India

The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Himalayan foothills and known for its tiger and elephant populations. The park is densly forested. The Manas river a major tributary of the Brahmaputra. In 1985 The Manas Wildlife Sanctuary was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The name of the park is originated from the Manas River, which is named after the serpent goddess Manasa. The Manas forest extends on both sides of the river and presents one of earth's most timeless vistas. The Manas river is a major tributary of Brahmaputra River, which passes through the heart of the national park.The Manas Reserve, located in the foothills of the Bhutan hills, far from human habitation, is a world in itself. The Manas River flowing through the Park demarcates the border between India and Bhutan.The reserve forests of the Manas National Park contain an Elephant Reserve, Project Tiger Reserve,
Biosphere reserve and have also been declared a World Heritage Site under UNESCO.The only tiger reserve in Assam and also famous for the rare golden langur and the red panda, Manas is one of the best-kept national parks in India. Manas is recognized not only for its rich biodiversity but also for its spectacular scenery and natural landscape which includes a range of forested hills, alluvial grasslands and tropical evergreen forests. It's home to India's second-largest tiger population.Manas is the only landscape in the world where pristine Terai Grasslands are seen merging with the Bhabar grasslands interspersed with diverse habitats ascending to Semi-Evergreen forests and then to Bhutan Himalayas. The Biodiversity is very rich here. The last population of the Pygmy Hog survive in the wilds of Manas and nowhere else in the world.The winters in Manas National Park are mild and temperatures rarely go beyond 25 degrees making the park a perfect location for a wild winter getaway.

Wildlife at Manas National Park


The park area falls in five districts: Kokrajhar, Chirang, Buxa, Udalguri, and Darrang in the state of Assam in India. The park headquarters are located at Barpeta road and the necessary clearances and permits should all be arranged from here before venturing further to the park. The area of Manas has roughly 45% grassland and 55% tree land as wildlife habitat. The river course may have about 100 sq.km. of reparian forests of grass and primary succession of tree cover, which is probably the most suitable water buffalo habitat any where and providing by far the best habitat for the tiger, where the concentration of the species is the highest.

Two major biomes are represented in Manas The Grassland Biome and The Forest Biome.

In The Grassland Biome Indian Tigers, Leopards, Clouded Leopards, Asian golden cat, Barasingha, Hoolock Gibbons, Smooth-coated Otters, Capped Langurs, Gaurs, Asian Water Buffaloes, B Sloth Bears, Barking Deer, Hog Deer, Black Panther, Golden Langurs, Assamese Macaques, Slow Loris, Asian Elephants, Indian Rhinoceros, Sambar Deer and Chital and many more wild lives in the park.

In The Forest Biome Birds Giant Hornbills, Jungle Fowls, Bulbuls, Brahminy Ducks, Kalij Pheasants, Egrets, Pelicans, Pied Hornbills, Grey Hornbills, Mergansers, Serpent Eagles, Falcons, Red-headed Trogon, Swamp Francolin, Wreathed and Rufous-necked Hornbill, Marsh and Jerdon’s Babblers, Pied Harrier, Rufous-rumped and Bristled Grassbirds, Hodgson’s Bushchat, Rufous-vented Laughing thrush, Finn’s Weaver, Ibis bill, Scarlet Minivets, Fishing Eagles, Magpie Robins, Bengal florican, Bee-Eaters, Harriers, Ospreys and Herons etc.
