Golkonda Fort - The Largest and 400 Years Oldest Fort in Telangana Hyderabad - Andhra Pradesh - India

The Golkonda Fort was originally known as Mankal. It was built on a hilltop in the year 1143. It was originally a mud fort under the reign of Rajah of Warangal.The Golkonda Fort is located in the western part of Hyderabad city and is about 9 km from the Hussain Sagar Lake Hyderabad. The outer fort occupies an area of 3 square kilometers and 4.8 kilometers in length.

The Golkonda Fort was originally a mud fort under the reign of Rajah of Warangal. Later it was fortified between 14th and 17th centuries by the Bahmani Sultans and then the ruling Qutub Shahi dynasty. Golconda was the principal capital of the Qutub Shahi kings.Golkonda was also a major centre for diamond trade in those days. The Qutb Shahi dynasty controlled the areas of the current East Godavari district. Where the famous Kollur mines were located.One of the famous landmarks of Hyderabad, Golconda fort will take you far back into a time when kings ruled, battles were fought, and history was created.It was from here that the most of the biggest diamonds in the world came from. These included the Kohinoor, Darya-e-noor, Regent and Hope diamonds.In 1686, the Mughal prince Aurangzeb started to lay siege on the fort of Golconda, with the intent of claiming Hydebarad, the wealthy capital of the Qutub Shahi dynasty.Today, even after almost 800 years, the fort still stands as one of Hyderabad’s greatest architectural wonders. One of it’s gratest engineering marvels is the fantastic acoustic effects: one handclap at a certain point below the entrance dome can be heard at the highest point of the pavilion almost a kilometer away.The important structures inside the citadel or balahissar are the imposing Silai Khana ( a three-storied Aslah Khana – armoury building), Nagina bagh, guard lines, Akkanna-Madanna Offices, Ramdas Jail, Darbar hall, ruins of Ambar khana, Baradari on the summit, an inner cordon wall, and a Masjid raised by Ibrahim Qutub Shah (1550-1580 AD). The east gateway is the only entrance to the citadel and it is one of the biggest gates in the entire fort.Ibrahim masjid inside the fort which’s similar in architecture to Charminar.The other buildings found inside the fort are Habshi Kamans (Abyssian arches), Ashlah Khana, Taramati mosque,camel stable, private chambers (kilwat), Mortuary bath, Nagina bagh, Ramasasa's kotha, Durbar hall, Ambar khana etc.Golconda Fort, Hyderabad is one of the primary tourist attractions.
