Located at Just one km away from the Thiruvananthapuram town, the Padmanabha Swamy Temple is one of the famous pilgrimage destination at the capital city. The city itself got its name from the deity 'Sree Padmanabha' of Padmanabha Swamy Temple. Padmanabhaswamy Temple is an architectural marvel. The first thing which you will notice is the architectural magnificence of its Gopuram, which stands 100 ft tall with seven tiers. There is a spring in front of the temple, which is wonderfully crafted in shape of lotus flower. This spring is called Padma Theertham. The temple also includes an extensive corridor which is adorned with 365 pillars, made up of granite, each one of which is extensively carved with intricate stone work. The Temple consists of two other important shrines, Thekkedom and Thiruvambadi, dedicated for the Deities, Sree Yoga Narasimha and Sree Krishna Swami respectively. The Padmanabhaswamy Temple stands by the side of a tank, named Padma Theertham (literally means the lotus spring).

Padmanabha Swamy Temple at Thiruvananthapuram is one of the important Hindu temples of India. The temple is dedicated to Lord Padmanabha or Vishnu. The temple is regarded as one of the 108 Divya Desams or Vishnu Kshetrams . The temple is administered by a trust supervised by the royal family of Travancore. In 18th century AD, King Anizham Thirunal Valiya Marthanda Varma suppressed the Ettuveetil Pillamar along with the conspiracies against the royal house, to take control of the temple and the province which came under it. The last major renovation was also done during the reign of Marthanda Varma. The temple is famous for its Arattu festival, which is till date headed by the royal family of Travancore. The procession is worth seeing as it is a grand spectacle of beautifully decorated elephants and musicians chanting Lord's name. Just in front of the sanctum sanctorum is a large single stone platform called Ottakkal Mandapam. Cut out of a rock in 1731 A.D, the 20 sq ft rock is 2.5 ft in thickness.

Men should wear ‘Mundu’ or ‘Dhoti’ while visiting the temple. They also have to remove shirt or t-shirt above waist. Women have to wear Sari (Saree), Mundum Neriyathum (set-mundu), Skirt and Blouse, or Half Sari. This means no pants for men or churidhar for women is allowed inside the temple. Dhotis are available for rent near temple locker room. Nowadays temple authorities allow to wear Dhotis over pants or churidhar for the convenience of devotees.
