After independence, Delhi became the capital of new nation. With the advent of independence, its importance has increased manifold and Delhi has now became the political, economic and culture capital of country. The built - up heritage of Delhi are to be found in groups in the successive cities. The Rashtrapati Bhavan was designed by Edwin Lutyens and built in 1931, to be the central point of the British power in Delhi. Originally called the Viceroy's House, the Rashtrapati Bhavan has 340 rooms, 37 salons, 74 lobbies and loggias, 18 staircases and 37 fountains in New Delhi. Fifty years after India became a republic, an attempt has been made to give people a chance to peep into the residence of twelve Indian Presidents, two Governor Generals and five Viceroys of the British Raj. Another interesting fact about the Rashtrapati Bhavan is that the building, which was supposed to have completed in four years took a rather long time of over seventeen years to get completed and just after one year of its completion, India got its independence. To the west of the Rashtrapati Bhawan, there is a wonderful Mughal garden which is open to the public every spring. Edwin Lutyens designed the building and construction work began in 1911. It was supposed to be completed in 4 years but war intervened and it took 19 years to complete it. Lord Edwin, the then Viceroy and Governor General of India was the first to live here in 1931. The Parliament House of India has a central hall topped with a domed structure and three semi circular chambers. These chambers were initially assigned to house the council of state, legislative assembly and the chamber of princes. However, the Parliament House now accommodates the ‘ Lok Sabha' or the Lower House of the Parliament and the ‘ Rajya Sabha' or the Upper House of the Parliament and a library. The three circular chambers are guarded by a string of 144 columns that adds to the extravaganza of the building's beauty. The Parliament House is flanked by beautiful gardens and fountains which enhances the glory of the building. The decision to build a residence in New Delhi for the British Viceroy was taken after it was decided in the Delhi Durbar of 1911 that the capital of India would be shifted from Calcutta to Delhi in the same year. It was constructed to affirm the permanence of British rule in India. This building gave the impression, in the words of a critique, the setting of a perpetual Durbar. The building and its surroundings were supposed to be ‘an empire in stone’, ‘exercising imperial sway’ and containing in it, “the abode of a disinterested elite whose rule was imposed from above”.Apart from all such excellent architectural patterns, the Rashtrapati Bhawan is known for its colourful gardens.
