Also called Bahai Temple or the Bahai House of worship, the Lotus Temple New Delhi is an important landmark in the city. This place of worship of the Bahai sect is literally constructed in the shape of a large, white lotus flower. An architectural feat in itself, this beautiful temple is flocked by people from all religions, a living example of the openness and equality promoted by Bahai laws. Styled after a lotus flower, with 27 immaculate white-marble petals, the temple was created to bring faiths together; visitors are invited to pray or meditate silently according to their own beliefs. The attached visitor centre tells the story of the Bahai faith. Photography is prohibited inside the temple. This white marble structure has altogether 27 lotus petals arranged in a symmetrical pattern. View of Lotus Temple from the air looks astounding. It was made to look like a lotus floating on blue water. Nine small pools surround the building. The Temple was built during 1980 - 1986 costing Rs 10 Million. The Temple is a Half Floating Lotus set amidst pools and garden. The petals are made of white marbles. The petals are made of special concrete clad with white marble, extracted from the Mount Pentitikon mines in Greece. It is the Only Bahai Temple of Worship in Asia. To make it a perfect structure there are nine inner petals and nine doors open in different directions. Completed in 1986 the Lotus Temple has 27 giant white marble petals and nine pools. The temple has got double curved surfaces. The steel used for making the shells of the petals were galvanized to protect it from rust. These shells have got a thickness of about 6 to 8 centimeters. The temple has the capacity to accommodate nearly 2500 people and has nine doors that open in a central hall. The whole structure is made of white marble that adds to the glory of the temple. It is about 40 meters tall surrounded by nine ponds and appears as if the temple is floating like a Lotus flower in water. Lotus Temple highlights the fact that every human holds a key for better future of the entire mankind and with a combined effort, we, the human race, will be able to foster a new world where parity will not depend upon cast, creed or religion.
