The Gangotri temple was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century. Gangotri in Uttarkashi district is being determined to be the holy place for the devotees and is recognized as Shri Gangotri Dham where the shrine of Goddess Ganga is being worshipped by thousands of pilgrims. The holy shrine of Gangotri is situated at an elevation of 3200 metres above sea­level. It is linked by a good motorable road. Gangotri Temple brings great significance to all where it is believed to be the same spot where Lord Shiva entangled the great waves of river Ganges in his matted locks. The river Ganga originates from the Gangotri glacier and is known as Bhagirathi. The name Ganga picks up later on after the river passes Devaprayag and merges into the river Alaknanda. Other than the temple at Gangotri and the famous dip in the glacier, there are many other places that are worth visiting. Nandanvan and Tapovan can be reached via a trek 6km north from the Gaumukh.
