Yamunotri Temple - The Temple Is Dedicated To Goddess Yamuna - Uttarakhand - India

Yamunotri Temple is one of the Important pilgrimage sites in Nothern Indian State of Uttarakhand. It is located in Himalayas at an altitude of 3285 Mtrs. Maharani Gularia of Jaipur built the Yamunotri Temple in the 19th century. The Yamunotri Temple is dedicated to the river Yamuna also known as Yamuna Devi.

The deity or Goddess Yamuna is made of black marble. Yamunotri, the source of Yamuna River and the seat of the Goddess Yamuna, the Yamunotri Dham is the holy journey at the height of 3293 meters at Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand. The original shrine was constructed in the year 1839 by Tehri Naresh Sudarshan Shah. However, a catastrophic earthquake damaged the temple severely. Later in the 19th century, the temple was rebuilt by the Maharani Gularia of Jaipur.There is a beautiful water fall located back of the temple. This pilgrimage town is also the beginning point for river Yamuna. Further up by one KM the frozen lake on top of Kalind Parvat is the origin of river Yamuna. The Yamunotri shrine is also quite close to the Indo-Chinese border. Destroyed by a major earthquake in 1923, it was subsequently rebuilt, then again damaged in 1982. This Dham is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, who is deemed to be the daughter of the Sun God, Surya Dev.

The Yamunotri Temple constitutes one of the four most important pilgrimages, collectively called 'Char Dham' of the Garhwal Himalayas. Yamunotri is in the opposite side of Gangotri, another pilgrimage of Char Dham series and the second abode in traditional Char Dham route. Yamuna is also the sister of Yama, the God of death, and so anyone bathing in the waters of the river is spared of a painful death. Hot springs closely located from Yamunotri are a must-see for every visitor. The hot water of the springs is also used by devotees to prepare rice and potatoes to be offered at the Yamunotri shrine. The pujaris of Yamunotri come from the village of Kharsali near Jankichatti. During the closing of the temple in winter the goddess Yamunotri is kept at Karsali village. The pujari or Pandas of this temple are from Kharsali village.

There are no any charges for darshan at Yamunotri Temple. You can take camera for videography or photography without any extra charges. You can also make some donation to the temple, also apply charges for some special pujas or abhishek in Yamunotri Temple.

Timing For Yamunotri Temple


Yamunotri temple remains close during winter times. The temple opens at the religious day of Akshaya-tritya and It closes on Diwali festival day which fall in the month of October.
