The Golden Temple, located in the city of Amritsar in the state of Punjab,is a place of great beauty and sublime peacefulness. The Golden Temple Amritsar India (Sri Harimandir Sahib Amritsar) is not only a central religious place of the Sikhs, but also a symbol of human brotherhood and equality. Previously this temple known as the Golden Temple, it was officially renamed Harmandir Sahib in March 2005. Construction of the Golden Temple started in 1574 on land donated by the Mughal emperor Akbar. The building project was overseen by the fourth and fifth Sikh Gurus. The temple was completed in 1601. The temple had to be substantially rebuilt after it was sacked in 1760. The entrance to the Golden Temple complex is through an ornate archway with intricate inlay work. Verses from the Granth Sahib are inscribed on the doorway. After the attack of the Afghan king in 1757, Maharaja Ranjit Singh sponsored marble inlay, the gold plating in 1830. However, in 1984, the Golden Temple was attacked by Sikh separatists and the Indian army troops fought into the temple compound and killed around 500 Sikh rebels. 100 Indian soldiers died here that took place for several hours.

The main north entrance is under a Victorian clock tower. Known as the Darshani Deori, the entrance is up a flight of steps and down again to the temple and holy tank. The temple is a two storey marble structure reached by a causeway known as Guru´s Bridge. The lower storey is in white marble with the walls decorated with inlaid flower and animal motifs in the pietradura style of the Taj Mahal. The architecture of the golden temple is a blend of the Hindu and Muslim styles. There is no charge to enter the temple and they will even feed you for your efforts of coming to visit. The Golden Temple feeds up to 100,000 people a day from the free kitchen run by volunteers. An amazing feat in its own right, but what is even more amazing is that this has been going for 450 years without missing one single day. Guru Ka Langar – devotees and visitors are invited to the 3 storey communal, open kitchen serving approximately 40,000 meals daily to people of all faiths and nationalities. The construction of the Golden Temple combines Muslim,Hindu and European design principles. The complex is lower than the surrounding area,so the visitor must step down in order to reach the Golden Temple. The Golden Temple has 4 entrances, welcoming people from all walks of life, regardless of caste, colour, creed, sex and religion.
