The Mehrangarh fort is situated 400 feet above the city of Jodhpur, surrounded by thick impregnable walls; the fort houses various palaces and courtyards which are a fine example of Rajputana style of architecture. The fort has 7 gates, 4 of which have real historical importance as they were built by the rulers to celebrate the clan’s various victories. The Mehrangarh Museum Trust was settled in March,1972 by His Highness The Maharaja Gaj Singh II with the principal objective of setting up a world class museum in Jodhpur. Mehrangarh Fort stands a hundred feet in splendor on a perpendicular cliff, four hundred feet above the sky line of Jodhpur. Burnished red sand stone, imposing, invincible and yet with a strange haunting beauty that beckons . Much has been written about the Citadel of the Sun, for truly, it is one of the most impressive in all Rajasthan. The success of the Maharaja's vision and the Trust's early efforts is evinced by the recognition The Mehrangarh Museum enjoys today; 65,000 foreign visitors and 3,00,000 Indian visitors in 1999-2000. Other attractions of Mehrangarh Fort, Rajasthan include several palaces inside the fort, with their sprawling and huge courtyards. One of the fort's palaces, The Moti Mahal or the Pearl Palace, has the royal throne of Jodhpur, the Sringar Chowki. The fort also has galleries, temples, etc. The fort has 68-ft wide and 117-ft elevated walls which overlook the surrounding plain.
The fort has seven gates and the most famous among them is the Jayapol(meaning victory). This gate was constructed by Maharaja Man Singh to celebrate his triumph over the armies of Jaipur and Bikaner. The magnificent craftsmanship of the Jodhpuri craftsmen is exhibited in the fascinating sandstone palaces within the Mehrangarh Fort. One of the two galleries off Daulat Khana Chowk displays textiles, paintings, manuscripts, headgear and the curved sword of the Mughal emperor Akbar; the other gallery is the armoury. The Mehrangarh Fort houses grand palaces like the Moti Mahal or the Pearl Palace that houses the royal throne of Jodhpur known as the Sringar Chowki, the Phool Mahal whose ceiling is adorned by gold filigree work, the Rang Mahal and the Chandan Mahal. Walls of Mehrangarh are 125 ft high and made of stone. In its entire history, the fort has been under the control of Rathore rulers. It has been occupied only five times. Shah Jahan’s mother Mani Bai was from the House of Marwar. The fort had more accommodation for women than for men as two thirds of the palace is taken up by the zenana (for ladies).The Chamunda Mataji Temple, serves as a holy shrine and is one of the oldest temple and holds great festival which is visited by the pilgrims during Dusshera.

By Air:
