Chittorgarh Fort - One Of The Largest Fort In India - Rajasthan - India

The Chittorgarh Fort is located on a high hill near the Gambheri River in Chittorgarh. Chittorgarh Fort lies at a distance of 112 kms from the city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. In 2013 Chittorgarh Fort and 5 other forts of Rajasthan, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

The Chittorgarh fort was built by the Mauryans in the 7th century AD. The fort is also known as ‘Water fort’ and comprises 22 water bodies, palaces, towers and temples. The fort is spread over 700 acre and stands on 180m high hill. It was considered one of the strongest forts of India. Located at the top of 180 meter high hillock covering massive area of 700 acres this fort is still houses around 2000 persons inside its complex. At one end of the Chittorgarh town the road climbs up and passes through several gates each one with a heroic story associated with it. A river seperates the Fort from the rest of the city. This fort is also famous for the beautiful Queen Padmini whose beauty from the word of mouth attracted Ala-ul-din to have a glimpse of her and then later on a wrong intention to possess her. The most imposing structures inside the Chittorgarh fort are the "Kirti Stambh" and the "Vijay Stambh". The "Kirti Stambh" was built by Maharana Kumbha in 1440 AD to celebrate his victory over Mohammad Khalji. 

The pedestal of the tower is 10 ft high and the tower stands at a height of 122 ft and is 30 ft wide at the base. The Fort also comprises several temples including Sammidheshwara Temple, Jain Temple, Kalika Mata temple, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, Meerabai Temple and Kumbha Shyam Temple. These are the ancient temples that have noteworthy carvings and intricate work. Gaumukh reservoir and Bhimtal Tank are other places worth visiting. Chittorgarh Fort is truly an embodiment of chivalry and pride of the Rajputs. The fort has a long story of romance, courage, determination and sacrifice. A glimpse of the fort still makes one to think the glory of the Rajputs who once lived here. Chittorgarh fort is also called as Water Fort. The fort had 84 water bodies, out of which only about 22 exist today. These Include talabs (ponds), kunds (wells), and baories (stepwells). All the talabs have a natural catchment. The kunds and baories are located below the talabs, so that even the seepage from the latter is not lost. There are some massive attractions in Chittorgarh Fort like,

• Tower of Victory or Vijay Stambh: Built in 1440 AD by Maharana Kumbha.
• Tower of Fame or Kirti Stambh: Dedicated to Adinathji the 1st Jain Teerthankar.
• Gaumukh Reservoir: A deep tank filled by a spring coming from a 'cow mouth'.
• Rana Kumbha Palace: The ruined edifice of great historical and architectural interest.
• Padmini Palace: The palace scene of an incident directly responsible for the bettle.
• Meera Temple: Build by Maharana Kumbha in 1449.
• Kalika Mata Temple: Build originally in the 8th century.
• Fateh Prakash Palace: Build by Maharana Fateh Singh this huge palace is of morden style.
• Jain Temples or Sattavish Deri: At present six jain temples on the fort.
• Seven Gates of the Fort: Padan Pol,Bhairon Pol,Hanuman Pol,Jorla Pol,Ganesh Pol,Laxman Pol and Ram Pol.
