A structure which is not properly anchored to the ground and rather attached to a wall, makes it unique and 953 small windows or jharokhas.Intricate designs, domed canopies, floral patterns, fluted pillars, fine stone inlay and arches- Hawa Mahal is a fusion of Rajput and Islamic styles of architecture.
The Hawa Mahal is a beautifully designed structure, which is in reality just a facade covering what was the women's wing of the city palace. Built in 1799 AD by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, Hawa Mahal was constructed so that women of royal families could a view of everyday life through the windows, as they never appeared in public.A five-storey high red sandstone structure complete with over 950 windows, Hawa Mahal was made in such a way that the breeze circulates through these windows, giving the palace its name.Constructed of red and pink sandstone, the palace sits on the edge of the City Palace, and extends to the zenana, or women's chambers.The lattice work also helped give it its name by allowing a cooling breeze to pass into the palace, keeping that area much cooler then other parts of the palace. Hawa Mahal also lies in close vicinity of the world renowned UNESCO heritage site of Amer Fort.Entry to the Hawa Mahal is not from the front but from a side road to the rear end. Facing the Hawa Mahal, turning right and again to the first right, leads to an archway entry and then to the rear side of the building.It was in 1799 that the Kachhwaha Rajput ruler, Sawai Pratap Singh, grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh who built Jaipur, constructed Hawa Mahal as a continuation of the Royal City Palace.The building does not have stairs to reach the upper floors; the storeys are connected by slopes. From Hawa Mahal, you have an excellent view of the city. The monument also has an archeological museum.
