The Victoria Terminus (VT) now called Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), was built to the design of the consulting British architect, Frederick William Stevens. Work began in 1878 and was completed ten years later. The station was opened in 1887, on the Silver Jubilee of Empress Victoria. On 2 July 2004 the station was nominated a World Heritage Site by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO. The Heritage Museum has displays on the history of Indian Railways, old engine types, etc. There are interesting old photos, models, letters, artifacts and objects. It took 10 years to complete and was named in honour of the reigning Queen Victoria. In 1996 it was renamed to it current name. As a bonus, the museum is air-conditioned. The 19th century station stands as an example of excellent and advanced technical and structural solutions of that time. The most important intersection of this port city houses this railway terminus, which holds significance as one of the famous historical buildings of the city. Many scenes of the Oscar-winning feature, 'Slumdog Millionaire', were shot at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and many more Bollywood films have been sequenced here.

 It may also be considered an epitome of confluence of two entirely different cultures, British and Indian. Architects from the two countries exchanged notes andworked together to give a new look and style to Mumbai (then Bombay), including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The station is among a series of Gothic public buildings that give South Mumbai its grandeur. A proposed extension to include the nearby Churchgate Buildings features on India's Tentative List. The C-shaped plan of the building has symmetry about an east-west axis. The sides of the building are beautifully designed with a high central dome at the center. The network of suburban trains (locally known as locals, short for local trains) radiating out from this station are instrumental in keeping Bombay running. This is Railway station and probably the only station which is UNESCO world heritage site. Was built in 1887 and its name was victoria terminus which was changed in 1996.
