The Victoria Memorial Hall Built between 1906 and 1921, the Victoria Memorial Hall dedicated to the memory of Queen Victoria (1819–1901) and is now a museum and tourist destination. It was built to commemorate the peak of the British empire in India. The Victoria Memorial is 338 by 228 feet and a height of 184 feet.Victoria memorial hall is considered one of the finest art museums in Kolkata. Apart from being a memorial, the hall serves as a tribute to the success of the British Empire in India.Victoria Memorial is one of the famous and beautiful monuments of Kolkata. It was built between 1906 and 1921 to commemorate Queen Victoria's 25-year reign in India. After the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, the British government gathered the reins of control of the country directly, and in 1876 the British parliament made Victoria the Empress of India. Her reign ended with her death in 1901.Victoria Memorial Hall deserves a must visit tourist attraction tag from all those who wish flip back the pages of the British era. Here you find many photos and effigies of prominent personalities who played a key role in contributing to the glory of India.The total cost of construction of this monument amounting to one crore, and five lakhs of rupees (Rs.1,05,00,000/-) was entirely derived from their voluntary subscriptions. The Architect entrusted with the design was W. Emerson.The Queen may have enjoyed their company, but whether these statues delivered an impartial history lesson, as Curzon had intended, successive generations may judge for themselves. Curzon himself seemed to consider impartiality achieved by the exhibition within, but equally approved the unambiguous message of the external ornaments. Victoria Memorial has notable collection of weapons, sculptors, paintings, maps, coins, stamps, artifacts, textiles etc. The Royal gallery in Victoria Memorial has portraits of the Queen and Prince Albert. There are numerous paintings.The Victoria Memorial is topped by an enormous (16' high, 3-tonne) bronze Angel of Victory, which is capable of revolving, though in recent times grease has had to be used to facilitate this. By its very nature the whole structure has "represented always an imposed power".It is a great place to enjoy some time in peace amid the sprawling gardens. The musical fountains add to the charm of the gardens. Light and sound shows are also organized in the evenings which add to the entertaining element of the place. The Memorial's grandeur at a height of 200 feet (184 ft up to the base of the figure of Victory, which is again 16 ft high) is accentuated by the serenity that engulfs you in its corridors. The groups of figures above the north porch represent Motherhood, Prudence and Learning. Surrounding the main dome are figures of Art, Architecture, Justice, Charity etc.

Timing of Visit For The Victoria Memorial Hall


The museum is open in working days, except on Mondays. The ticket counter closes half an hour prior to the official daily closing time of galleries.The museum is closed to the visitors on every Monday and on holidays like Republic Day (26th January), Holi, Independence Day (15th August), Id-ul-Fitr, Gandhiji's Birthday, Dussehra, Christmas (25th December). The Light and Sound show also known as Pride and Glory – the Story of kolkata, which the Victoria Memorial Hall organises as a permanent special event. The show is held both in English and Bengali and the show timings are 6:15pm to 7:00pm between October and February in Bengali and the 7:15pm to 8:00pm in English. The timings for show between March and June are 6:45pm to 7:30pm in Bengali and 7:45pm to 8:30pm in English.
