The style of building that evolved under akbar’s patronage was chiefly executed in red sandstone readily available with insertions of white marble frequently introduced for purposes of emphasis. The tomb of Akbar though started in akbar's period but was completed by Jahangir. This is the reason why it suffers from stylistic and conceptual incoherence. The absence of crowning dome is another enigma. The tomb carries the characteristic flavor of the airy tiered pavilions of Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. Before his death in 1605. The tomb is situated on Sikandrabad, in a large garden beside Delhi-Agra road. Akbar’s tomb is a perfect structure constructed using red sandstones and glossy white marbles. Located centrally in the square plan, at the junction of four causeways dividing the garden into four quarters, the main tomb building has five storeys built in the shape of a truncated pyramid. In the rush to see the Taj Mahal, many are so distracted that they miss the other wonderful examples of Mughal architecture in Agra.

A perfect blend of Hindu, Christian, Islamic, Buddhist, Jain styles of architectures, Akbar's Tomb is just like the ideals of the great monarch himself an amalgamation of the positivities of different cultures. The architecture of Akbar's tomb represents a blend of different architectural styles. The Islamic style is reflected in its splendid entrance, delicate patterns, admirable jali work, Persian style calligraphy as well as the garden known as Charbagh layout. Akbar (1542 – 1605) can be considered as a major landmark in the Mughal reign. Akbar ascended the throne in troubled times, after the death of his father, the former Emperor Humayun. He was just 14 years of age when he took over the responsibility and his efforts and vision made the Mughal Empire an epitome of culture and development of an organized society.
