The Gol Gumbaz is an important monument of Indo-Islamic architecture. Gol Gumbaz is the tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah which was constructed in the 17th century by the seventh ruler of Adilshahi dynasty. Gol Gumbaz is 530 kilometers away from Bangalore, the capital city of Karnataka. Yaqut of Dabul was the architect of this huge and wonderful structure. A huge cube shaped structure of 47.5 meters (156 ft) length on each side and The dome of the structure is second in size only to St. Peter's Basilica Rome which is built in the history has an outer diameter of 144 feet. Gol Gumbaz is the major attraction of Bijapur in Karnataka stands on a floor area of 1700 sq mts with a height of 51 m and diameter of 37 m. the walls of the tomb are 3m thick. The width of each of the sides is equal to the height which is a little above 200'. The exterior diameter of the dome is 144'.
The Gol Gumbad was built by Muhammad Adil Shah in the year 1656. The dome of the building is carved with elegant petals and the height is 27.4 mts. The corner towers do not harmonize with the dome as they look more like a Chinese pagoda rather than a minarets. Another significant feature of the Gol Gumbaz is its central dome which stands without the support of pillars. Gol Gumbaz is an amazing tomb in Vijapur city of tombs. You have to climb some 120 steps to reach the top of the tomb. The Gol Gumbaz contains the tombs of Muhammad Adil Shah, his wives, daughters and other family members. There is a mosque qith an oblation tank in front of the Naybat Khana or a drum house, which now houses the architectural museum. The actual tombs are in the basement, which can be accessed by a staircase in the western entrance.
