The Jantar Mantar is a set of 14 colossal astronomical observatory instruments situated in the heart of Jaipur. It features the world's largest stone sundial. These incredibly accurate devices were constructed by Maharaja Jai Singh II, who considered date, star alignment and other celestial movements critical to predicting his fate and fortunes in wars and scheming. UNESCO World Heritage site Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is an astronomical observation site built in the early 18th century. It includes a set of some 20 main fixed instruments.

Maharaja Jai Singh II, the founder of the 'pink city', was a great scholar and an avid astrologer. He studied philosophy, astrology, architecture and religion in various schools, and was also well versed with universal mathematical concepts such as Euclid's Clements, Ptolemy's Syntaxes and the Master works of Aryabhatta. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh (Jai Singh II), the legendry figure in construction is credited with setting-up of solar observatories at Jaipur & in four other cities of India, was born in 1688 A.D. and succeeded the throne of Amber at the age of eleven Years in 1699 A.D. The Jantar Mantar is a resplendent reminder of the royal heritage of Jaipur and stands as a royal testimony to a former epoch. The term "Jantar Mantar" literally means "instruments for measuring the harmony of the heavens". The name was given to the astronomical observatory established by the king of Jaipur, Raja Jai Singh. The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur was built in 1734 and was one of the most precise astronomical instruments of its time. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is so accurate and enduring that it is still used today for astronomical observations and calculations. Jantar Mantar Jaipur observatory was constructed by Maharja Sawai Jai Singh II - the founder of Jaipur. Jantar Mantar terminology is derived from two words of Sanskrit language, “Yantra” and “Mantra”. “Yantra” means “Instrument” and “Mantra” means mysterious formulae for calculations. Hence, Jantar Mantar word represents the instruments used for various calculations. Built for measuring the heavens, the name is derived from the Sanskrit yanta mantr, meaning ‘instrument of calculation,’ and in 2010 it was added to India’s list of Unesco World Heritage Sites.
