Keoladeo National Park Also known as Keoladeo Ghana National Park and formerly known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of India which is located at Bharatpur Rajasthan. Keoladeo Ghana National Park is One of the beautiful place for Bird Lovers. Keoladeo National Park is the largest Bird Reserve in India was declared as a protected sanctuary in the year 1971 and was included in UNESCO World Heritage Site list by the year 1985.

The Keoladeo National Park is in east Rajasthan, about 2 km south east of Bharatpur. It falls on the western side of Agra at a distance of about 50 km. A lovely and must see place for bird lovers. It is only an hour drive from Agra and a joy to cycle or walk around. Advisible to take a guide as they know all the places where special things are to see. Bharatpur Sanctuary is one of the oldest wild reserves in India and was created 250 years ago when it was named after the Keoladeo (Shiva) temple within its boundaries. Earlier, the park was a traditional hunting spot for the Maharajas of Bharatpur in the year 1850. It was a tradition to shoot many ducks in the lake of the reserve in the honor of the British viceroys. The Bharatpur Lake, around which the bird sanctuary is located, is man made created as a result of the dam that was constructed to save the Bharatpur town from floods. The depression created by extraction of soil for the dam was cleared and this became the Bharatpur Lake. After the Indian independence in 1947, the region was protected as a bird sanctuary under the forest act. The sanctuary is also known for its vast population of around 250 species of birds that have made a permanent home in this region.

Bharatpur bird sanctuarty is also known as kevlaadev vanya jiv abhayaaran. It is very famous bird sanctuary. At here lots of different types birds come from thousand of kilometer. All birds come and stay here specically in winter. Some of the important migratory birds at Bharatpur bird sanctuary include numerous species of Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Stints, Wagtails, Hawks, Shanks, Warblers, Flycatchers, Buntings, Wheatears, Pipits and Larks. The park derives its name from the temple of Keoladeo (Shiva) and ‘ghana’ which locally means dense, implying the nature of the vegetation. During the cool winter months it is also possible to see large Indian Pythons sunning themselves. These species fly through distant places like Siberia and Central Asia specifically in winters. Migratory birds at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary include several species of Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints, Wagtails, Warblers, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Buntings, Larks and Pipits, etc.

The major attractions of tourists visiting the park are the numerous migratory birds like Cranes, Pelicans, Geese, Ducks, Eagles, Hawks, Shanks, Stints, Wagtails, Warblers, Wheatears, Flycatchers, Buntings, Larks and Pipits, etc. The north east area of the park is mostly dominated by Syzygium cumini, Acacia nilotica and Mitragyna parvifolia. Basically a bird paradise, the Bharatpur Sanctuary boasts almost 370 bird species. Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Boar Painted Storks, Egrets, Cormorants, Jacanas, While Harriers, Fishing Eagles, Pied Kingfisher and Siberian Crane are main wildlife attraction at Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary.

Best Time To Visit Keoladeo National Park


The best months to a tour to Keoladeo National Park are from October to March. The temperature ranges from a maximum of 48°C in summers (May and June) to around 5°C in winters (December to February). Rainfall is less but sufficient. From August to November one can see resident breeding birds, while from October to February migratory birds populate the place. Rest of the months are relatively dry and bird-free.
