The Amarnath Temple is located in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Approximately at a height of 12,760 feet, the Amarnath Cave is visited by devotees each year for the darshan (pious sight) of Lord Shiva’s lingam, which is naturally formed with ice. The Amaranth Cave was discovered by a Muslim shepherd of Batakot, Buta Malik, when he lost his flock and found that it had strayed into the sacred spot some 150 years ago.

Amarnath is located at 145 km east of Srinagar in Kashmir. Amarnath is an ice Siva-linga that changes size with all the seasons of the year and also as the moon waxes and wanes, it becomes bigger and smaller. On the full moon day, the Lord Shiva linga is about 6 ft high. Amarnath is located in a glacial valley at 4,175 m which is about 13,700 ft anove mean sea-level and cave is about 150 feet high and 90 feet long. Amarnath Shiva Lingam is one of the holy trinity where Lord Shiva is a living god. The Rig Veda most sacred and most ancient book of India evokes his presence in its hymns, Vedic Myths, rituals even testify his existence from the dawn of time. Legend conveys that Shiva recounted to Parvati the secret of creation in a cave in Amarnath. This journey is not advisable neither for those who are physically unfit nor for kids. There are tents set up by the localities which can be hired for rest or accommodation. Carry high calorie food items like chocolates and dry fruits to fight against the cold and as easy energy substitutes. The Amarnath Yatra is organised every year by the Jammu and Kashmir Government during the month of "sharavan" i.e. in July - August. Chandanwari is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra and the destination is Amaranth Cave , which is supposed to the abode of Lord Shiva. For performing this Yatra, one is required to get registered. Jammu & Kashmir Government does the registration and makes extensive arrangements every year for the successful completion of the pilgrimage.
The cave of Amarnath was where Shiva lord reported the secrecy of immortality, Amar Katha with his Wife Parvat. Shiva hesitated initially but finally gave inside.Shiva wanted to reveal the secrecy in a place of isolation far from any life being and thus chose the cave of Amarnath. Yatra to Baba Amarnath Holy Cave for which one has to trek a height of about 14,500 ft is full of thrill and joy . The Distance between pahalgam to holy cave is approx 45 kilometres in which 16 kilometre is mtorable from Pahlagam to Chandanwari and from there Sheshnag is aprox 12 kms and froms heshnag panchtarni is 15 kms and from Panchtarni sangam is 3 km and from Sangam hloy cave of amar nath is 3 kms. Though the original pilgrimage subscribes that the yatra be undertaken from Srinagar, the more common practice is to begin the journey from Pahalgam, and cover the distance to Shri Amarnathji and back in four or five days. Pahalgam is 96 km from Srinagar. The yatra is also now undertaken, on a shorter route, from Baltal (Sonamarg), which is 102 kms from Srinagar. To get Amarnath Registration every person must obtain compulsory medical health certificate from the authorized doctors appointed by Shri amarnathji shrine board, then only you will be eligible to visit amar nath cave. In another legend it is believed that the Valley of Kashmir was submerged under water and Kashyapa Muni drained it through a series of rivers and rivulets. When the waters drained, Bhrigu Muni was the first to have Darshan of Lord Amarnath.

How to Reach Amarnath Temple
By Road:
Pahalgam and Baltal town of Shrinagar valley serves as a base camp for Amarnath Yatra. From Baltal, the sacred cave of Amarnath is located approximately 14 km (8.70miles) whereas from Pahalgam it is at a distance of 45 km (28.58 miles). To reach pilgrims can either choose walking through these rugged terrains or ponies.
By Rail:
Jammu is the nearest Rail head to Amarnath. It connects Jammu and Kashmir state to rest of the country.
