During the 19th century the forests of Ranthambore were the private and exclusive hunting reserves of the Jaipur and Karauli royal family. In fact there was excellent forest cover almost all over India. Due to less population density exploitation of the forests was negligible. But by the end of the 20th century, everyone felt the need for conservation of forest and wildlife in India. So, in the year of 1955 Ranthambore National was founded as the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary by the Government of India. one of the largest and most famous national parks in northern India. The Ranthambore Tiger Reserve was declared a wildlife sanctuary in year 1957 and in year 1974 it gained the protection of "Project Tiger". It received it's status of a National Park in year 1981. In the past this area was the hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur. It was declared a game sanctuary in 1955 and later became a National Park in 1980. Finally on 1980, it became the Tiger Reserve in India. Ranthambore is also cited as a heritage site because of the pictorial ruins of the fort within the park. This famous national park is the best place to spot wild tigers in Rajasthan. Comprising 1334 sq km of wild jungle scrub hemmed in by rocky ridges, at its centre is the 10th-century Ranthambhore Fort. A variety of birds including Owlets, the ubiquitous Langur (monkey), Leopard, Caracal, Hyena, Jackal, Jungle Cat, marsh Crocodiles, Wild Boar, Bears and various species of Deer are the other attractions. Ranthambore is also counted as the famous heritage site because of the pictorial ruins that dot the wildlife park. The main food source for the tiger is the swamp deer like Barasinsga and on occasion the wild buffalo and also wild boar etc. The vegetation of the Ranthambore is the tropical dry deciduous and tropical thorn type due to its hilly track, water is confined from narrow valleys and some lakes. There are several lakes in the park which known as Padam Talab, Raj Bagh Talab and Malik Talab. It offers excellent accommodation and internal transportation facilities. The park remains open every year from October to May.Famous for the exciting and frequent tiger sightings captured dramatically in several books, this park is today affected by ecological pressures and poaching. The sanctuary is famous for its vast and extremely camera friendly Tiger population and is visited by tourists from all around the globe. The park comprises of a typical deciduous forest which is common with most jungles in the central Indian region. It is also a home to 539 various species of flowering plants and the terrain mostly comprises of forests and open grasslands.
Wildlife At Ranthambore National Park
Ranthambore National Park is best known for its population of majestic Royal Bengal Tigers. The Royal Bengal Tigers of Ranthambore can be seen in prowling in the forest, stalking their prey, drinking on the edge of the lakes and watering holes and basking in the sun on the rocky outcrops of the ruins of the Ranthambore Fort.Ranthambore wildlife sanctuary today offers an intense diversity of flora and fauna. Tigers, the park's pride makes it one of the best places in the country to observe them. Apart from that a large numbers of Sambar, Chital, Nilgai, Gazzelle, Boars, Mongoose, Indian Hare, Monitor Lizards and a large number of birds. More than in any other park or sanctuary in India, tigers are easily spotted here in daylight. They can be seen lolling around lazily in the sun, or feverishly hunting down Sambar around the lakes.
Flora and Fauna At Ranthambore National Park
There are many kinds of cats found in Ranthambore are Leopard, Caracal, Leopard cat, Fishing cat and Jungle cat. The other large predators include Sloth Bear, Striped Hyena, Jackal, Desert fox, Palm civet, common mongoose, crocodile, python etc. There are two species of antlers the spotted deer (chital), and Sambhar deer and two kinds of antelopes namely the Indian Gazelle chinkaraand the Nilgai. The vegetation in the park is mostly of the dry deciduous type with a large variety consisting of nearly 300 species like Am, Imli, Babul, Banyan, Dhak or Chila, Dhok, Jamun, Kadam, Khajur,Khair, Karel, Khejda, Kakera, Mohua, Neem. The other large mammals that can be seen in Ranthambore tiger reserve are the Sloth bear, Indian fox, Jackal, the extremely occasional Wolf, very few Indian wild dogs (Dhole), Small Indian Civet, Palm civet, Common Indian and Ruddy mongoose and Striped Hyena.It is a slow growing species with generally varying girth and height ranging from 10-15 meters with crown cover more than 60% found on hill slopes and valleys. The growth of Anogeissus pendula is generally stunted on plateaus where the residual soil is poor and shallow.

The three major lakes, Rajbaugh, Milak talao and Padam talao attract a variety of migratory birds. The lakes are covered with pink lotuses on which the sambar deer often feed. The grassy edges are frequented by chitals, wild boars and other ungulates. The Marsh crocodiles bask on the shores, the Tigers are often on the prowl at the peripheries. Best Time To Visit Ranthambore National Park
Ranthambore Sanctuary isn’t open for visitors throughout the year. The monsoon months are the breeding season and the park remains closed from June till September.The summer months however are preferred by most tourists as wildlife sightings during the summers are more frequent. So, From 15th March to 15th July is the best Time To Visit Ranthambore National Park.The winter months fall between December and February and the temperatures can go as low as 2 degrees during the peak winters. The best visiting season of Ranthambore national park is during the months of October - March and April to June. Temperature varies from 10°C to 25°C in Winters and from 25°C to 45°C in summers.
