The Humayun’s Tomb is an excellent example of Persian architecture. The Humayun’s Tomb was commissioned in 1526, nine years after the death of Humayun, by his widow Hamida Banu Begum. In the Humayun’s Tomb one can see architectural features which over time went on to become important component of Mughal architecture, such as its octagonal shape and its high central architecture.

Located in Nizamuddin East in Delhi, it is the tomb of the great Mughal emperor Humayun built by his beloved wife Hamida Banu Begam. The first Mughal building of note to be constructed in India. Built in A.D. 1564 by Haji Begum, wife of the Emperor Humayun , eight years after his death in Delhi in the vicinity of the city of Din Panah founded by the emperor. Humayun died in 1556, and his widow Hamida Banu Begam, also known as Haji Begam, commenced the construction of his tomb in 1569, fourteen years after his death. The structure was inspired from the tomb of the Persian Mongol ruler, Oljeytu, at Sultaniyya. The tomb was built fourteen years after the death of Humayun. It is recognized as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Located near the crossing of Mathura road and Lodhi road, this magnificent garden tomb is the first substantial example of Mughal architecture in India. It is well known that Humayun picked up the principles of Persian architecture during his exile, and he himself is likely to have planned the tomb, although there is no record to that effect. The tomb was constructed at a cost of 15 lakh rupees (1.5 million). Several rulers of the Mughal dynasty lie buried here. Bahadur Shah Zafar had taken refuge in this tomb with three princes during the first war of Independence (AD 1857). The mausoleum stands on a massive platform which has a height of up to 7 meters. The building is constructed from red sandstone, while the tomb itself is made of yellow and black marble. The Persian influence can be seen in the arched alcoves, corridors and the high double dome, while Indian traditions have inspired the creation of the kiosks, which give it a pyramidal outline from distance. The last Mughal Bahadur Shah Zafar took refuge in Humayun’s Tomb during the First War of Independence in 1857. He was arrested along with his sons by the British from the mausoleum.The site was chosen on banks of Yamuna river, due to its proximity to Nizamuddin Dargah, the mausoleum of Sufi saint Nizamuddin Auliya.
The tomb is surrounded by beautiful lush Mughal garden. The garden is divided in to four parts by pathways. This is typical of all Mughal gardens. The various water channels for the fountains make this tomb a true architectural delight. The entry to the Humayun's Tomb is through a long axial processional track. On the way, there are gateways, which offer a glimpse of the tomb. The tomb is octagonal in shape and placed over a platform with colonnades, under which there are numerous graves of lesser known people and can be ascribed to various nobles and workers of Humayun's period. Each square, in turn, is divided into smaller squares by pathways. This forms a typical Mughal garden known as charbagh. Highly developed engineering skills were employed in the working out of the fountains. There are over 160 other Mughals buried along with Humayun. Among the unmarked cenotaphs are Akbar’s mother, Hamida and five later Mughal Emperors, buried over the centuries. Humayun's tomb is believed to have been designed by his widow. Its plan, based on the description of Islamic paradise gardens, is known to have inspired the Taj Mahal and many later Mughal tombs. Over 3000 tonnes of sandstone and marble were used in the construction of the tomb; brought from over 300 kilometres away.

By Air :
